Vekhand / Vacha / Sweetflag [Botanical name - Acorus Calamus]は、半水生の香り高い多年草で、インドやビルマの湿った湿地帯、マニプールやナガ丘陵の湖や川の縁でよく栽培されています。Acorus Calamusは何千年もの間、多くの文化圏で取引されてきました。Vekhand（根／根茎）は様々な病気に薬用として使用されており、その香りからCalamusのエッセンシャルオイルは香水業界で重宝されています。
アーユルヴェーダによると、Vachaは味が刺激的で、効力が高く、不調なヴァータを抑えるのに役立ちます。アーユルヴェーダでは、Vachaは毒素を吐き出し、尿や便から毒素を排出するのに役立つとされています。伝統的な使用法では、Vekhandは鼓腸、胃の膨満感、腹痛、食欲増進のために日常的に投与されていたと言われています。
現在、Vachaの根はホットインフュージョンの形で与えられ、気道の炎症、咳の発作、発熱の軽減をサポートします。VekhandパウダーはLicoriceパウダーと一緒に蜂蜜と一緒にペースト状にして与えると、喉の痛みが和らぎます。小さじ1杯のVachaパウダーを1カップの温かい水と一緒に飲むと、腸の痙攣や腸内ガスの緩和を促し、健康的な食欲をサポートします。Vekhandは健康な神経系をサポートします。外的には、Achorusの根の粉末をBhringarajの粉末と一緒にペースト状にして頭に塗ると、頭皮の健康と髪の成長をサポートします。外用では、Vachaの根のパウダーは、リウマチの関節の痛みや炎症の緩和を促します。

Vekhand / Vacha/ Sweetflag [Botanical name – Acorus Calamus]is a Semi-aquatic strongly aromatic perennial, cultivated in damp marshy places in India & Burma, commonly in Manipur & Naga hills on the edges of lakes & streams. Acorus Calamus has been an item of trade in many cultures for thousands of years. Vekhand (roots/rhizomes) has been used medicinally for a wide variety of ailments, and its aroma makes calamus essential oil valued in the perfume industry.
As per Ayurveda Vacha is pungent in taste, hot in potency & helps to suppress vitiated Vata. Ayurveda mentions that Vacha helps for emesis of toxins, clearing out toxins through urine & stools. Traditional uses mentions that Vekhand was routinely administered for flatulency, stomach fullness, abdominal pain and increasing appetite.
Nowadays Vacha roots are given in form of hot infusion which supports reduction of inflammation of airways, cough bouts & fever. Vekhand powder is given with Licorice powder in form of paste with honey to soothe the throat and reduce pain. Vacha powder taken 1 tsp with 1 cup warm water promotes relaxation from intestinal spasm, bowel gases and supports healthy appetite. Vekhand supports healthy nervous system. Externally Acorus root powder when applied with Bhringaraj powder as paste on head supports healthy scalp and hair growth. Externally Vacha root powder promotes relief from pain and inflammation of rheumatic joints.
Scientific study of Acorus has shown presence of volatile essential oil, bitter principle, calamine and little of tannin which all contribute to Vacha’s usefulness on human body.
